Dr. Filiberto Rodriguez, trained at the world famous Mayo Clinic and the Cleveland Clinic, performed the first open heart surgery in the upper valley in 1983. He founded all three open heart surgery programs in McAllen: McAllen Medical Center, 1983; Rio Grande Regional Hospital, 1986; McAllen Heart Hospital, 1995.
